Rhône-Alpes, the second largest regional economy in France is characterized by a particularly vigorous culture of small and medium-sized firms, relies both on traditional industries and cutting-edge industries. In recent years, the Region is intensifying its business-university synergies to boost innovation and employment and clusters approaches to allow a scientific and technological environment.
Rhône-Alpes has is the second highest-ranked French region in terms of research, and fifth highest-ranked in Europe. It has a high concentration of brain-power. This position is reinforced by the presence of more than 230 000 students taking courses in Universities, 600 research laboratories with 28 000 permanent researchers.
Since 2005 Region Rhône-Alpes fostered the creation of the IMAGINOVE Cluster covering the main sectors of the moving image industries giving a clear priority on digital content and on cross-media dimension. IMAGINOVE supports innovative programmes for technological, economic and international development, and generates opportunities of cross-fertilization between the regional players in the field of creative moving image industries (video games, animation, cinema/audiovisual, multimedia): 650 companies, 23 research laboratories, 28 image-related training courses, plus international events such as the Game Connection, Annecy’s International Animated Film Festival, Cartoon Moovie and the Serious Games Sessions.
Rhône-Alpes also encourages links between professionals of the textile and fashion industry, facilitating the economical growth of young companies through its support to the “Village des Créateurs”. Rhône-Alpes is recognized as well for design, especially for the International Design Fair organized by the well-known Cité du Design in Saint-Etienne, and the expertise of the Centre du Design (ARDI) in Lyon.
